When it premiered in theaters Inside Out, the audience ventured into Riley's mind, a place where several different emotions live, but where there are also truly unique internal locations and processes. The film premiered in 2015 and was able to outline and simplify something as complex as the functioning of our head.
In this new universe created from the Pixar movie, which this week returns with the sequel Inside Out 2, it shows how each person encloses their own mental system and how emotions help us navigate and make decisions in the real world. Afterwards, the movies teach us that these emotions really need to work as a team so chaos does not reign in our head.
On the other hand, the sequel tells the story of what happens to Riley as she delves into adolescence and adapts to the emotional and physical changes that puberty brings. It also incorporates some new concepts and locations into the protagonist's mental map.
Personality Islands and Core Memories
In addition to emotions, there are other important concepts to consider in Riley's mind. Among them, Core Memories stand out, which are generated from time to time in an important moment for the person and end up defining their personality.
While most memories are stored in a part of the mind known as Long Term Memory, Core Memories remain in the Headquarters, kept in a special place.
This allows emotions to replay these moments quickly, using them to influence the person. And these memories help create the Personality Islands, large islands within the mind that help to build someone's personality.
Other Places and Characters
In addition to those mentioned, there are other very special places and characters in Riley's mind. Such as Dream Studios, a kind of movie producer that ensures Riley's dreams remain sweet, among many others.
There are also other characters who play important roles in the story, such as the different workers in the departments, who operate in Long Term Memory or keeping watch over the Land of Imagination. Or the guards of the Subconscious, who work to keep Riley's main fears as far away from her mind as possible.
Some of them will intervene in Headquarters when they receive notice that puberty is beginning and they must introduce major changes in the control center.
