These are the products that could increase in price due to the 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada

The series of tariffs imposed by the various North American governments will affect consumers.

Just a couple of weeks away from the start of his second term as President of the United States, Donald Trump ratified his decision to impose tariffs, of 25%, on products from Mexico and Canada. 

Through an official statement released on Saturday, February 2, the US government confirmed that these series of measures are aimed at "stopping the influx of poisonous drugs into the United States". 

According to the Republican's speech, these types of measures also seek to attract investment in US territory, as well as to establish themselves as a form of negotiation. However, and according to various experts, such as the president of the American Chamber, Larry Rubin, these measures would mean an "inflationary spiral for the population in the United States". 

According to federal data, just last year, about 30% of the country's imports came from these trading partners, making it imminent the rise in prices of a large number of goods and products in the following months. 

Which products will be most affected by the increase in tariffs? 

Automobiles and automobile parts 

Data from the Department of Commerce point out that in 2024 alone, Mexico became the leading exporter of vehicles and parts to the United States, reaching a value between $64 billion and $87 billion. This category also includes various transport equipment, for which one of the most important value chains between both countries has been established. 

Various foods 

The tariffs imposed by the United States on Mexico would also greatly affect a large number of foods. According to statistics from the US Department of Agriculture, agricultural products worth $46 billion were imported from Mexico. 

Beer 

According to data from the same US Department of Agriculture, the tariffs would also impact the beer sector, through brands like Modelo and Corona, the ones with the greatest presence in the US coming from Mexico. 

In addition to the above, these products would also see significant increases: 

  • Computers and computer equipment 

  • Diverse machinery

  • Metal products 

  • Oil and gas

Gas 

In the case of Canada, US consumers could end up paying much more for gas services. According to data from the US Energy Information Administration, the northernmost country in America exported about $97 billion in oil and gas to the United States.

Following the confirmation of said tax, both the Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum and the Canadian president Justin Trudeau, announced the imposition of tariffs on the US as part of a generalized response. However, and more recently, Trump and Sheinbaum announced, through their official accounts, a pause in the imposition of such tariffs by both nations after holding discussions.
