Set during the time of the Second World War, the miniseries We Were the Lucky Ones has chosen various Spanish locations to place the places where the story unfolds. Specifically, several cities in Andalusia, which along with other areas of Romania, have been chosen as the setting for this heartbreaking tale.

Based on the successful novel of the same name by Georgia Hunter, We Were the Lucky Ones follows one of the Jewish families who were separated at the beginning of the Second World War, narrating what happened to each of its members and how they did everything possible to survive and reunite.

Specifically, it tells the story of the Kurc family, a family of Polish Jews who ended up scattered all over the world. Before the outbreak of the war, they had a house and a business in Radom, but the conflict ended up tearing them apart. Unlike other Jewish families, the Kurcs managed to survive, but they did not stop living traumatic and painful experiences of all kinds. Some had to fight on the front lines and others were sent to concentration camps. And all of this is narrated in the new Disney+ fiction, which was filmed in various locations located between Spain and Romania.

Filming in Spain

Although most of the series was filmed in Romania, certain scenes of We Were the Lucky Ones were filmed in some places in Spain. Among them stand out Málaga, Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera, and El Puerto de Santa María. These are the main Spanish locations that we see on screen.

According to IMDb, the scenes that take place on the Bug River in Poland were filmed in Andalusia. Those who have seen the series will remember that, in episode 2, when Halina (Joey King) and Bella (Eva Feiler) decide to travel to Lodz, Poland, they must sneak through the area occupied by the Germans and travel to the area occupied by the Soviets. This leads them to a wooded area near the Bug River.

In addition, the part that takes place in northern France was filmed in locations that may be in Romania or in Spain. When the war begins, Addy (Logan Lerman) is recruited into the Polish unit of the French army and is sent directly to the core of the conflict, on the Western Front. Although it is not clear whether it was filmed in Romania or Spain, it is known that the shortest distance between Poland and France is 1381.6 kilometers. This is approximately the distance that separated Addy from his family.

On the other hand, when the Soviets arrest Genek (Henry Lloyd-Hughes) for not acknowledging his Polish-Jewish ancestry in the rental contract for the apartment, they decide to take him to a gulag in Altynay, Siberia. The scenes that take place there were filmed in Andalusia.

Also filmed there was the part of the plot that takes place in Dakar, Senegal. Specifically in Málaga. When Addy leaves on the SS Alsina hoping to find refuge in Rio de Janeiro, the ship ends up stopping in Dakar, Senegal, 5320 kilometers away from his home. In both real life and the series, most of the passengers aboard the Alsina end up stranded there for four months, but thanks to the purchasing power of his partner, Addy managed to get off the ship.

Finally, scenes filmed in Spain include those that take place in Morocco, in Ilha Das Flores and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and in Monte Cassino, Italy.
