Currently, this town has only 32 residents, a number that has decreased over the years. Despite its size, Birdsong has struggled to stay afloat and improve the living conditions of its community.
But it didn't always carry this name. In its early days, the town was known as a small rural settlement that depended mainly on agriculture and livestock. However, in 1984, the town was officially incorporated as a municipality, with the goal of establishing a municipal water and sewer system that would allow its inhabitants to have basic infrastructure services.
The lack of access to running water was one of the biggest challenges for this Arkansas community. Over the years, residents worked together with state authorities to achieve improvements in water distribution and infrastructure development, allowing Birdsong to remain as an independent town on the map of the United States.
As has happened with many other rural towns in the United States, Birdsong has experienced a population decline due to migration to larger cities in search of better economic opportunities. In the 2010 census, the town had 41 inhabitants, but over the past decade it has seen a reduction to 32 people.
The town's youth have chosen to move to urban centers such as Little Rock or Memphis, leaving behind a town where life is peaceful but with few job opportunities. The community, mostly composed of families who have lived in the area for generations, has adapted to this new reality, maintaining the town's identity despite its small size.
